Things are really pretty good here... I should be much happier than I am.

aw yeah, get me a pop
What American accent do you have?
    Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

I'm flying into Detroit tomorrow, for the weekend. And for a haircut, a new cell phone, a new (free) storage space for my stuff, and some guilt from the parents.

    Should be fun.

    It's weird to be bored...
I was going through my RSS feeds that I never read, which include Kostya's brother. So I thought, "Hey, it's been a while since I googled Cap'n Post-Rock himself."

    Gold.

I've gotten quite sentimental suddenly and don't want to move out of my apartment. But I have to be out on Monday.

Harvard made an offer. I don't know. Third round with Google on Wednesday.

So this week and next I had/will have interview with:

-UM, the Career Center, a 40-50 hour job for not a lot of money, but okay benefits and definite long-term security. It's not too divergent from my overall supposed career path, although not related to Russia/Europe at all. And I would be free to do whatever projects I can dream up. Did I mention the salary is crap, though? I'd have to stay in my same studio apartment.

-Harvard, the Center for Russian & Eurasian studies. Totally up my alley, with community outreach, school visits, visiting scholar babysitting. It's half-time though. I would take it if they offered me enough money, but it's half-time, so they're almost certain not to. And Boston is crazy expensive. There's no way I would make rent and student loans and other bills and still eat, for less than 30K. And somehow I doubt they'll offer that, for half-time.

-Google. Yes, I got in on the hype. I had a phone interview, and now I'm working on a "project" to show them my mad skillz. It would be a boring, soulless, obnoxious corporate job. But for good money. And good benefits. And let's face it, I'm really sick of being poor, and of being worried about money. Am I ready to sell out yet? I don't know.

    To quote Ms. Rebecca Howe...
    "I'm too stupid to LIVE!"

Yeah, so I've been sending out resumes for the past few months that have the wrong ZIP code on them. No wonder I'm not getting many rejection letters.

I just read this, doing a lousy impresssion of him, for this. I had to do it out in my car so as not to frighten my neighbors or the squirrels who live in my ceiling. Good times.

Why yes, it is 9 pm on a Friday. Thank you for noticing.

    I love the Internet
So, lately I've tried a couple things I had previously blown off--netflix.com and priceline.com. And both are pretty awesome. I'm on my second free trial of Netflix (yes, I am that cheap, and I have enough different email addresses to last a while :P), and it's been really helpful in catching up somewhat on the movies I've not seen due to studiousness/laziness/cheapness.

And priceline.com... wow. It's like ebay, only faster, and with the suspense of not knowing who will take your bid! I got a 5-star hotel room at 48th and Park Avenue for $159! I was hoping for something a little closer to 57th, because after almost a month of European food, I am sure a white pie at Villagio will taste pretty darn amazing! Not that it doesn't always :)

How much of our lives are spent leaving and being left behind. Angry red taillights trailing off in the distance.

I am in the midst of going through my soon-to-be-deleted umich mailbox. Conspiracy theorist that I am, I am beginning to think ICTS must be in cahoots with local bars and liquor stores, because even though it's noon on a Sunday, I now very much want a drink.

Pearl Jam's new CD is not helping the mood either. "Life Wasted"? I'll trade you anytime, Mr. Vedder. But Pearl Jam is a time-honored traditon in my life just the same. I remember making a tape of Ten off my brother's CD back in the day, and listening to it when I was supposed to be asleep.

I picked the trifecta of the Preakness yesterday. Too bad I didn't bet. But sadly my childhood hero, Gary Stevens, is now in the announcer's booth.

Anyway, I should get moving. Having dinner at my brother's house.

    Damn, old crushes die hard.

And it just had to be in the Int'l Institute too. I kept wishing for all my 203 peeps, even Daniil and Adam. But at least Herbie said my last name right.

I'm not ready for tomorrow. In so many ways. But then again, I am. Today at the med school was sad, saying goodbye (maybe? Do I suddenly not have a summer job?) and giving/getting gifts.

This userpic is me at age 8, with Vanilla the pony, a.k.a. Vinnie Ponarino. It's funny how no matter what I accomplish in my life, part of me thinks I might never be happier than I was right there. As Jerry Seinfeld once put it, "Who leaves a country packed with ponies to come to a non-pony country?"

From an email forward from Sonya-- Inner Peace
I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me and we
    >could all use a little more calmness in our lives. By following the simple
    >advice I heard on the Dr. Phil show, I have finally found inner peace.
    > > Dr. Phil proclaimed, "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all
    >the things you've started and never finished."
    > > So, I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't
    >finished, and before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle
    >of Merlot, a bottle of White Zinfandel, a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream, a
    >bottle of Kahlua, a package of Oreos, the remainder of my old Prozac
    >prescription, the rest of the cheesecake, some Doritos and a box of
    >chocolates.
    > > You have no idea how freaking good I feel. Please pass this on to those
    >you feel might be in need of inner peace

    Damn
This was my parents' next-door neighbor. It is incredibly weird to see the pictures of her van like that. Pretty tasteless of the good ol' Midland Daily News.

The older son mentioned at the end of the article is the one who once drew a swastika in shaving cream on the side of our house by my bedroom window. If that tells you anything about the kind of "churchy" people they are. I honestly never liked the family much, but all the same, I feel bad for them. What a horrible thing to happen.

    ...I'm done.

Until grad school anyway, but that won't (I'm praying) be the same.
